Identifying Target Markets For Your Brand

About the Author: Mike DiFrisco is the "affordable branding guy." That's because I believe that no one knows your brand better than you. So don't waste your time or money hiring an overpriced ad agency or consultant to develop the brand strategy for your business; you can do it yourself.

Identifying target markets for your brand is critical because your customers are the future success and growth of your business. But who are your customers and how can you find more like them?

In their book on leveraging creativity, Juicing the Orange, Pat Fallon and Fred Senn discuss the strategy of one of their clients, United Airlines, as it struggled to find a way to differentiate itself among the other legacy air carriers and the start-up, no-frills airlines that were chipping away at its market share. They decided to focus on the core market of frequent business travelers. These folks made up only 9 percent of United's travelers, but they represented 46 percent of United's revenue.

Their thought was that if they could appeal to the frequent business travelers, leisure travelers would follow. ("If these seasoned road warriors know which airline to fly, surely I can do no worse than flying with the same carrier.") This philosophy is similar to the secret of finding the best roadside diner: go where the truckers eat.

So focusing on your target audience may not be about finding the biggest group of people who can and will patronize your business, rather, it's about finding the best group of people. For United, focusing on the core market of frequent business travelers was their chosen strategy.

Finding Your Core Market

Your target audience is made up of the people who love of your business and what it offers. They are not everyone who will come in contact with your business.

In order to find your target market, start by refining your target audiences.

Just take a look at the customers you have now.

- Who are your best customers?

- Which target segment makes up the bulk of your customers, supporters, or members?

- What do all these segments or individuals have in common?

- Can you find others like them?

Recognizing what your customers have in common can help you craft a marketing strategy to draw in more of the same people, thus building your target audience into a successful business.

How much do you know about your best customers or supporters?

- What is their typical age?

- Are they primarily male or female?

- What level of education have they received?

- Do they have any special interests or hobbies?

- How much is their household income?

By combining demographic and psychographic information (see exercise, below), you can begin building a mental profile of your core market. One business may find that men over 55 living in the Pacific Northwest and are interested in pro sports are their best prospects. Another business might discover that highly educated, empty nester women with lots of disposable income are their most valuable targets.

The only way to develop marketing communications that resonate with your target audience is to become knowledgeable about their wants, needs, and motivations. So ask them. Set up a continuous feedback and communication loops between your customers and the company. Make two-way communications a part of your corporate culture. You might also consider designing a short survey and sending it to your current and prospective customers and see what kinds of offerings, messages, and services your business should be providing.

While most businesses have multiple target audiences, they should only have one core market in order to provide as much focus as possible.

Sometimes, discovering your core market is about deciding whom it is that you're NOT going to serve. Take Voce, for example, a premium wireless provider that isn't looking to sell mobile phones to the whole world (like AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and the rest). Voce targets only upscale users with the finest-quality handsets, a simple, albeit pricy, flat-rate plan, and an exclusive concierge service--24 /7 live customer support. Every call to Voce is answered by a real, live human being--with no annoying phone trees.

Because of their conscious decision of who not to target, Voce is able to align its offerings (high-end handsets), its service (Voce Personal Assistance) and its retail locations (boutiques in Beverly Hills, California, and at Neiman Marcus) with its preferred audience. You will not find Voce phones or plans at WalMart or even Target.

This targeting is what keeps Voce from simply becoming another wireless face in the crowd and from wasting marketing dollars on reaching people who can't and won't become customers.

10 Things You Can Do to Help Your Business

10 Things You Can Do to Help Your Business

With all the media hype about the downturn in the economy, many businesses are inclined to call it quits and close up shop. Instead of throwing in the towel, however, people should focus on the positives and search for possible solutions to improve anything negative.
Results can be seen, by new businesses and old, by concentrating on specific tasks that can help put your business in a better position.
I recommend using these ten marketing strategies to help your business become more profitable in 2009 and beyond. You may find that some may work for you better than others, but the key is to find the ones that work for you and implement them into your routine so that your business can thrive.

1. Have a website that has been recently updated and which you can easily manage yourself that is search engine friendly.

2. Have a blog and be sure to have it set up to be simulated to several different mediums upon posting. Audio and video blogs are becoming more popular every day, with video blogs,in my experience, becoming the best way to attract new customers.

3.Get yourself a company page on Facebook(see my Social Networking page), and look into running ad campaigns there if the demographics are suitable.

4. Get involved on other Social Media realms such as LinkedIn,YouTube,Digg, etc.
(Again, for a great list see my Social Networking page)

5. Be sure that your marketing material clearly states what your offer is and what action you want your potential customer to take.

6. Get useful company documents, such as forms and templates, online using sources such as Google Docs or wikis, etc. It is becoming more important to be able to share and collaborate online with tools that can help mobilize your business.

7. Track your ad results so you know which activities you want to continue, and which ones are not worth continuing.

8. Make sure you have a form to build your leads,i.e.list. Whether it be an online contact form that captures the customers email address and name, or whether you get your customers by phone, fax, or walk-ins, you can't convert them into a paying customer if you have no lead to follow up with.

9. Contact your old clients. This is often overlooked by many businesses, but if they have done business with you in the past, they likely will do more business with you in the future. This can't happen, however, if these leads are just sitting dead with no one reaching out to them for their business.

10. Set up a Google alert for your company so you know when people are talking about your company or products. Whether the alerts turn out to be good or bad, this gives you a chance to at least know what is going on, and take corrective action if the need arises. This is also a good tool to use to keep an eye on your competitors as well.

There are many more ways to help keep your business thriving, but this list has some keys that could make your business better if you can stick to any of them that you find work, and will help create a better business for you for years to come. Good luck and hope you enjoyed reading. See you next time.

Nicotine may be addictive, but it is the other ingredients that make cigarettes harmful

Cigarettes have many unwanted and unnecessary chemicals and carcinogens. Cigarette smoking has been banned in most public places mainly because of second hand smoke. Smoking can make your clothes smell, your teeth turn color, and shorten your breath. The biggest concern among smokers and their loved ones though is the worry of developing cancer. Cigarettes have been blamed for causing many cases of lung cancer, as well as throat and mouth cancer, and more. Who hasn't seen the recent commercial of the lady who had to have her fingers amputated from being a chronic smoker. While nicotine may be to blame for the addiction, it is the other chemicals and carcinogens in cigarettes that are to blame for many of these other problems smokers face every day.

The American Cancer Society has stated "Although it is nicotine that gets and keeps people addicted to tobacco, other substances in tobacco are responsible for it's cancer causing effects". Smoking has now caused people to feel as though they are "left out", and even shunned by a big part of society that now views smoking as disgusting and intolerable. People who feel that smokers are making the world less fresh and clean, and can't stand the smell or the effects of second hand smoke. People want to be in a clean environment, but is there something that can be done to help these nicotine addicted air and body polluters? How do we help these people regain their health, energy, stamina and even regain control? Even the price of cigarettes now has some people caught in the dilemma of how they will be able to afford their habit. The price of cigarettes seems to be going up all the time, most of the time due to new or rising taxes placed on tobacco products, and in this economy to be addicted to cigarettes also means putting more of a strain on your other spending.

This nicotine addictive habit used to be accepted at bars, restaurants, planes, trains, lounges, offices, stores, airports, hotels, bowling alleys, casinos, and ballparks. Now it is highly unlikely for anyone to be able to light up in any of these places, and in some cases it may even be off limits to able to smoke in your car or even in the place you live. So what are the alternatives?

There are a variety of ways to try to get the smoker, whether it be yourself or a loved one, to try and kick this habit, the hardest of which is probably quitting "cold turkey". Some people have even found hypnosis to be a solution to their addiction. The most popular methods however are likely trying a nicotine substitute, such as "the patch" or nicotine gum. My favorite though is electronic cigarettes . This is new to the USA and can give the smoker the same feeling as smoking a real cigarette. The nicotine cartridge enables the smoker to inhale and exhale as though smoking a regular cigarette, but there are no cancer causing carcinogens and chemicals that you would find in a regular tobacco cigarette, and no harmful second hand smoke for those around you to inhale. Other benefits to these electronic cigarettes also include not stinking up your clothes and not discoloring your teeth.

According to the American Heart Association, there are 25.6 million men and 22.6 million women who are cigarette smokers. Cigarette smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the United States and the major single cause of cancer mortality, being responsible for about 87% of lung cancer deaths alone. Only about half of the deaths related to smoking however are from cancer. Smoking is also a major cause of heart disease, aneurysms, bronchitis, emphysema, and stroke, and also makes pneumonia and asthma worse. More than 4,000 different chemicals have been found in tobacco and tobacco smoke, of which at least 60 are known to cause cancer. Nicotine is what makes the basic smoker become addicted, but is not the cause of these illnesses. To become addicted to nicotine likely won't kill you, but to become addicted to cigarettes likely can. It looks like the best way to avoid all the pitfalls of the dependence on cigarettes is to either quit, or to try one of these nicotine alternatives. Most people know how hard it is to quit smoking, but it looks as though the growing number of nicotine alternatives could make this habit a little easier to break, and make us a healthier nation in return.
